Man Shot in Missouri. Potential Comparisons to Ferguson?

On the night before Christmas Eve, an armed 18-year-old was shot in the St. Louis suburb of Berkley in the state of Missouri. Identified as Antonio Martin, this teen has been said to be robbing a Mobil gas station. Following the robbery, a 34-year-old police veteran began questioning locals about what had caused the panic in the surrounding area.

According to reports, the officer then saw a young man walking towards him and as the officer moved backwards, he lost his balance and as he fell, he fired 3 shots aimed to the gunman, one of which hit the gunman, which resulted in his eventual death.

The police authorities have decided to not release the name of the officer as of now. But the incident has caused controversy because the teen was black. And more than the death of a person, the debate that has spared has been more about a “black man” being shot. And social media is on a rage with this already.

Anita Elizabeth, my friend and an 18-year-old from Queens, New York, posted a comment on her Instagram saying, “Armed or unarmed, police should not shoot to kill”.

This is also true but at this point, the political scenario is resting on a very fragile scale that can lose balance even with some small stimuli. And the unrest in public has caused great debate about how the actions of the police have caused great panic amongst a racial community in particular.

What remains to be seen is whether or not there is any major action taken against the officer who fired the shot and the obvious reaction of the public too, is something that must be taken into account.

CNN quoted the Mayor of Berkley saying shooting cannot be compared to officer-involved deaths in nearby Ferguson and on Staten Island, New York, he went on to say more on the incident, “(It) does not appear…. That the police officer initiated.”

antoniThe surveillance video from the night is being studied and further actions will surely take place. The mother of the gunman also released a statement that suggested that she was unaware of the gunman’s thoughts and actions and would like to know what the actual facts of the night are.
