Premature Prediction for the Actual Award:
Winner: Julianne Moore
Chance to Steal: —
The actress field has become a bit of a snore. Academy voters are incredibly predictable here. What do four of these five nominations share in common? They are great actresses who took on a role as an emotionally damaged, potentially crazy woman. Voters like actors who can do “crazy” or can undergo some transformation as a physically or mentally damaged individual. It is a little sad that they vote this consistently, but they love it. Moore is the best pick for winning the award. She is even more of a lock in this field than Simmons and Arquette are in their respective fields. Felicity Jones slays a role reminiscent of Jennifer Connelly in “A Beautiful Mind” back in 2001. Pike is absolutely terrifying with her psychopathic turn in “Gone Girl,” which, combined with the fact that there is a real fear of “Gone Girl” being shut out of other categories, secures Pike her nomination. Award winner Witherspoon will definitely receive her nomination for her work in “Wild.” Jennifer Aniston is a big name in Hollywood. Cotillard is eyeing her spot and it will come down to her getting the nomination over Aniston if she can overcome Aniston’s household name.
